Traffic cop Gabriel Mbiti is being investigated for being “too wealthy.”

A police officer will forfeit the KSh 10 million in his bank account, seven of his plots of property, five of his vehicles, and a motorcycle. This comes after a judge determined that his monthly wage of KSh 20,000 is insufficient to support the level of wealth he has accrued. However the officer claimed that he had obtained the assets through side jobs, sacco savings, and winnings from shooting contests.

Chief Inspector Gabriel Mbiti Mulei, who failed to explain how he came to have such enormous fortune compared to his wage, runs the risk of losing the KSh 10.5 million in his four bank accounts. In addition to the cash, the officer risked losing his seven land parcels valued KSh 19.4 million, five cars, and one motorcycle.

Mbiti claims he has been working for more than 20 years. The officer insisted that in addition to having been employed actively for more than 20 years, he also runs side businesses to supplement his income. He continued by saying that in addition to holding several positions at the Coast, he was also a police sacco member. The officer said that the land parcels he owns in Malindi, Kwale Township, and Ndithini/Mananja were acquired through installment payments, loans, and winnings from shooting contests.
However, the EACC charged Mbiti with soliciting payments from motorists in Malindi while acting as the base commander for traffic since his deployment in February 2008.
