More than 500 Kenyans, including members of his family and former government officials, have received state commendations from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
Just three weeks before his retirement in August, when the country will elect its fifth president to fill the remainder of his two five-year mandates, the head of state presented the incredibly coveted honors.
Kanze Dena, the spokesperson for his State House, was given the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear by Uhuru, according to the gazette announcement of the honors (C.B.S.). Others were Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu, Justices Isaac Lenaola, and Daniel Musinga. One of the people honored with the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear was Nana Gecaga, Uhuru’s niece and the CEO of the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) (E.B.S.). Similar praise was given to political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi.

Jomo Gecaga, the president’s nephew and Nana’s brother, was among those given the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart. He also works as Uhuru’s personal assistant (M.G.H.). Nzioka Waita, a former State House chief of staff, also received the MGH. Lekolool Timothy Stelu, Uhuru’s Aide De Camp (EBS), and Lukoye Atwoli, as well as Media Council of Kenya Chief David Omwoyo and M-Pesa Africa Managing Director Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, were also honored with state commendations. They were each given the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS).
